November marked a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 mountain biking season for the Toyota Specialized Racing Team, as Matt Beers, Alex Miller, and Johan van Zyl delivered standout performances at the highly anticipated FNB Wines2Whales stage race.
This year’s event was packed with drama, grit, and exceptional teamwork, showcasing the power and determination that define the Toyota Specialized squad.
Matt Beers and Alex Miller: A Winning Duo
Stage 1: Pacing, Strategy, and Strong Leadership
The first stage of FNB Wines2Whales always sets the tone for the race, and Matt and Alex wasted no time asserting their dominance. The pair climbed efficiently and powered through the technical portage sections, building a commanding lead of over four minutes by the finish.
Reflecting on the day, Matt emphasized their strategic approach:"The plan was simple—hit the 20-minute climb hard enough to shake everyone but leave just enough gas for the rest of the day," he explained.
Alex added a touch of humor, calling the long portage a “wake-up call” that kept them focused and on track for victory.
Stage 2: Resilience Through Adversity
Day two brought its fair share of challenges, with fierce competition from other top teams and a dramatic crash by Alex that briefly threatened their momentum. But their partnership shone through, as Matt’s steady leadership and Alex’s sheer determination kept them in contention.
"I told him, ‘If nothing’s broken, suck it up!’ And he did,” Matt recalled. Despite the mishap, they crossed the line victorious, with Alex riding on adrenaline to the finish.
Stage 3: Tactics, Timing, and Victory
Heading into the final stage with a solid six-minute buffer, Matt and Alex played it cool until the infamous Wheat Fields climb, where they launched a perfectly timed attack to seal the win.
"We hit it hard, broke the elastic, and decided to go for the stage win," Matt said. The team’s seamless coordination and unmatched grit carried them to yet another triumph, closing out an unforgettable season on a high.
Johan van Zyl: Quiet Leadership and Teamwork
While Matt and Alex fought at the front, Johan van Zyl partnered with Rudi Koen under the banner of Toyota Specialized Imbuko to deliver a steady and determined performance.
After a tough start on Stage 1, they found their rhythm on the technical trails of Stage 2, finishing 5th and setting the stage for a strong conclusion. On Stage 3, Johan’s consistent pacing helped them battle through a relentless headwind, ultimately securing 8th place overall.
Reflecting on the race, Johan highlighted the importance of communication and preparation:"I focused on giving Rudi as much draft as possible and keeping us moving smoothly," he explained.
Specialized Equipment: The Competitive Edge
As always, the Specialized S-Works Epic bikes proved to be the team’s not-so-secret weapon. From sandy sections to relentless climbs, the bikes’ responsiveness and reliability helped the riders conquer every challenge FNB Wines2Whales threw at them.
"It’s the perfect ride for Wines2Whales," Matt noted. With zero mechanical issues and unmatched performance, the Specialized S-Works Epic continues to set the standard for competitive mountain biking.
