What a year! The fact that we wrestled to decide what to leave out of this massive holiday readathon is a testament to a year brimming with running. The Two Oceans Marathon and Oxpecker Trail Run—two of the biggest races on earth, held on opposite ends of our big, bright, beautiful country—are already sold out for 2025!

You'll love our deep dives into these iconic events, plus vivid moments from others, like cresting Potberg at sunrise on the Whale of Trail. Picture standing bathed in a kaleidoscope of winter fynbos, soaking in the breathtaking scenery of the Breede River as it winds its way past contoured and twisted sandstone cliffs into an ocean teeming with whales.

We also experienced the spine-tingling emotional anthem at the start of the UTMB in Chamonix, standing beneath the massive, ice-encrusted Mont Blanc, surrounded by runners from every corner of the globe—a reminder of the unifying power of running.

We had the privilege of running these incredible races this year, among many other local and international events. Read why runners like you travel far and wide to experience them.

Running not only allows us to explore amazing places but also to meet extraordinary people. I have immense respect for the athletes whose livelihoods hinge on cold-hearted results, public personas, and the fickle demands of fans and sponsors.

We get to talk to them away from the spotlight, where the grind is real, and the pressure takes its toll. Get to know some of these less-famous runners in our feature stories: SA road marathon women’s record holder Glenrose Xaba, trail tamer Daniël Claassen, globetrotting shoe guru Geoff Crow, and our six-foot-two cover star Janneke Scherpenhuyzen, whose passion for exploring the planet on foot is as inspiring as her smile.

All this, plus the latest gear for Christmas, training advice, new shoes for 2025, and a thought-provoking Last Word debate on whether flat marathons are fast but maybe not fun.

Whether you’re chasing new PRs, exploring epic spaces, or simply grateful to be moving on your feet, for R90 (just 54c per glossy page), we've got you covered!
