KAP sani2c ‘OG’ - The Original Gangsta of SA Mountain Biking

What's in a name? When Shakespeare pondered this, he suggested that names are inconsequential, that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

However, the team at sani2c, led by the legendary 'Farmer' Glen Haw, thought differently. As the iconic 3-day South African mountain bike stage race prepares for its next edition, they've decided to re-evaluate the names of its three events. They believe that the right name can help riders find where they truly belong when they enter KAP sani2c in 2025.

There are three versions of the same event because the demand to ride sani2c is immense, with many participants eager to return year after year. Despite the differences in names, each event follows the same exhilarating 265 km route from Glencairn Farm near Underberg to the lush grass finish at Scottburgh Golf Club. This trail is packed with singletrack, challenging climbs, thrilling descents, and plenty of fun. Riders also stay at the same race villages at Mackenzie Club and Jolivet Farm, experiencing the same warm hospitality.

Glen Haw, the KZN dairy farmer who started this event in 2005, acknowledges the challenge in differentiating these events that essentially offer the same incredible experience. "It’s tricky because we hate to generalize about who enters which race, but to understand the unique 'characters' of each sani2c event, we’ll give it a go," he chuckles.

KAP sani2c ‘OG’

Formerly known as the KAP sani2c Race, this event is now called KAP sani2c ‘OG’. These riders are the ‘original gangstas’ of sani2c, passionate veterans who relish being part of the ‘first’ event, despite it being the last to start and finish each year. Here, you'll find Flavio, Grant, and George – the three stalwarts who have completed all twenty previous KAP sani2c events.

The racing remains fierce in the ‘OG’. As a UCI sanctioned event, it allows elite riders to accumulate valuable points, with a Prologue taking place the day before ‘OG’ begins. The presence of pro teams adds an electrifying atmosphere to the race village that’s unique to this event.

Despite its competitive edge, the ‘OG’ is also the perfect place for newcomers. The seasoned riders are always eager to share their love for sani2c, creating a welcoming environment for first-timers. With a limited field of 1000 riders, including a small percentage of pro teams, you’ll find family groups, parent-child duos, husband-wife teams, and even three-generation participants.

Glen is particularly excited about encouraging more women to join the ‘OG’. “We’re thrilled to see so many women getting into mountain biking, pushing themselves, and having fun. The sani2c finish line feeling stays with you forever,” he says.

KAP sani2c Adventure

The Adventure event retains its name, and for good reason. These riders are fiercely loyal to the Adventure experience. Even when sold out, they prefer to stay on the waiting list rather than switch to ‘OG’ or e-Trail.

Adventure riders believe they have the most fun. They range from hardcore racers who prefer to avoid the pro competition, to social riders who cherish the camaraderie and post-ride beers. The Unitrans Iconic Climb is a highlight, with riders swapping tales of their conquests at Jolivet, where they line up for their hard-earned socks.

KAP sani2c e-Trail

Formerly known as the KAP sani2c Trail, this event is now the KAP sani2c e-Trail, clearly marking it as the e-bike race, though all riders are welcome. This event, launched in 2024, is designed to provide an intimate experience with only 250 teams (500 riders).

Tamika Gandar, Farmer Glen’s daughter and race organizer, notes that the smaller field allows for more luxury tents and group-friendly table bookings. Glen observes a growing acceptance of e-bikes, noting that dedicated e-bike events make everyone feel more comfortable and respected.

Racing is serious business at e-Trail too. With leaders’ jerseys and fierce competition, this category is quickly developing into a highlight of the sani2c calendar.

A Good Night’s Rest

In line with their vision of community upliftment, the KAP sani2c team is launching a project to build steel beds for sani2c, creating employment and developing skills along the race route. This initiative benefits both the riders and the communities that make this remarkable event possible.
